A Message from the Team
Dear Members:
Happy Leap Year from your friends at the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce!  With this extra day that only comes once every four years, we hope you were able to do something fun and meaningful!
Our main focus for January was the 2016 Annual Dinner- one of the largest functions that the Chamber puts on each year. For the month of February, this event as well as others in the works have been at the forefront of our planning and progress checkpoints.
With our first major event for 2016 under our belt, we’re excited to share with our members and partners what else the year ahead has to offer. From Member Benefit Programs, Committee Seminars, or BAH Mixers, to the Membership Golf Tournament, and upcoming Summer Celebration, we’re pleased to offer our members with a variety of educational and business-based resources, as well as social and networking opportunities.  Be sure to stay tuned for more on these upcoming events and programs!
Make sure you follow us on Facebook and check our website ( for weekly news and updates, as well as our City partners’ site for additional news, events, calendar listings and more local information! (

Special Recognition: Geneva Police Department
In addition to the Citizen and Business of the Year Awards, the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce gave special recognition to the Geneva Police Department for their diligent services to the community.  In 2015, there was a noticeable increase in the department’s foot patrol and local presence on the street, which exemplifies their dedication to keeping Geneva safe.  The Police Department plays an integral role in the Geneva Community and their outstanding effort to serve and protect this city does not go unnoticed.
Business of the Year: The Finger Lakes Times
A long standing community organization, the Finger Lakes Times is a generous organization with a genuine sense of community spirit and pride that is demonstrated by their promotion of people, places, products, and stories throughout the communities they represent. The Times not only has a historic sense of community, but have also assisted those in need through their reporting as well as with their financial help.  One notable instance was in 2013 following the flooding in Penn Yan and Yates County.  They have been a proud member of the Chamber since 1976 and have formed a mutually positive relationship with the Chamber community for over 40 years, which are some of the reasons why the Finger Lakes Times is worthy of being named the 2015 Business of the Year.
Citizen of the Year: Trina S. Newton
As Superintendent of the Geneva City School District, Trina Smith Newton has been responsible for a $48.8 million dollar budget, 4 buildings, and 2,200 plus students.  Along with engaging in a $29.1 million dollar Capital Project (3 propositions with one requiring a 60% super majority), she has also expanded the World Language program for all grade levels (dual language Spanish program PreK-2, Mandarin Chinese language and culture program K-8, French, Latin, and Spanish 6-12).  She has addressed improving student achievement, improved the graduation rate, and decreased the drop-out rate, while still developing innovative school programs.  For these reasons and more, Trina S. Newton is truly deserving to be named the 2015 Citizen of the Year.

Business After Hours News!
The February BAH Mixer hosted by Left Bank was the perfect start to the 2016 Mixer series! Owner Sophie Paillard-Elkin provided guests with a brief history of the property as well as the ways in which she has brought out the building’s historic charm.
Guests who attended enjoyed As our members toured this elegant hors d’oeuvres provided by FLX Table, wine tasting from Red Tail Ridge Winery, and live music from The Cool Club and the Lipker Sisters.
We would like to extend a special thank you to Sophie Paillard-Elkin, Steph Annear, and Annemarie Buckley for organizing and hosting this event.  Their involvement and support was a large part of what made this event such a success.

{…Way to go Halsey’s!}
Last week, the Chamber’s Throw Back Thursday (#TBT) post included an article from Hobart and William Smith Colleges‘ Daily Update about the Chamber’s 2015 Women in Business Honoree Reception! This event, held in October of 2015 at Ventosa Vineyards, honored 11 different women across a variety of businesses, and featured a live performance from the Colleges all female a cappella group Three Miles Lost!  Read their article here!
For the month of February, Belhurst Castle featured chocolate specials all throughout the property!  From chocolate drinks to chocolate facials, these cocoa concoctions are a great touch for the month of love! Be sure to also check out their website for other monthly specials!

The Geneva Recreation Complex is still open for the season! The ice rink features hockey games for Hobart and William Smith Colleges and the Geneva City School District, as well as public skate times.  If you haven’t been this season, there’s still time to enjoy one of the highlights of the cooler months.
We also wanted to share some trivia from our friends at Ashley Furniture Homestore of the Finger Lakes!  Did you know that approximately 30 million pieces of Ashley furniture are delivered to homes annually? We didn’t!
